There are many wonderful traditions at Kinhaven and one of the most amusing is an event called Wally Wampus, where students dress up in often very silly costumes and prepare funny skits for each other. The event is centered on a character named Wally Wampus who, as legend has it, lives in the pond on campus. As I began working on this piece for brass and timpani, I very quickly settled on the idea of writing a series of marches that, in the spirit of Wally Wampus, would be fun and different. As such, there are movements where the brass and timpani change roles (as the students often do in their skits), or where the unexpected might happen (extremes in register, or dynamics, etc.).
