In the original work, my initial intent was to create a piece that was quiet and very intimate throughout, in other words, a "whisper" of a piece. Back in 2004 as I began working on the music and as I began considering the different ways in which we whisper, it became clear to me that a "whisper" can have a variety of nuance and intensity, and this became the focus of my work. In 2013, the addition of the guitar has completely transformed the work. The initial piece was always an intricate study in color, texture and timbre. The addition of the guitar has opened up a whole new world and as such, Whispers is even more complex and ornate exploration of shades of color. The piece opens with the violins, viola and cello sustaining and tinting the guitar part. Gradually the role of main melodic voice moves to other instruments and everyone becomes involved the kaleidoscopic process of the piece. Whispers was composed for Kenneth Meyer and members of the faculty at the Kinhaven Music School, specifically Shannon Thomas and Nicholas DiEugenio, violins, Kenneth Kwo, viola, and Adam Grabois, cello., and the piece is dedicated to them with thanks and admiration. The piece was premiered at the Kinhaven Music School, Senior Session Faculty Concert Series, Weston, VT, July 27, 2013. The original string quartet version of Whisper was composed for the Cassatt String Quartet and was premiered in Blacksburg, Virginia, on the Musica Viva! concert series on January 30, 2005.
